In this award the judges looked for evidence of how workforce development has improved as a result of collaboration, long term relationships and common processes across organisations.
 
The Winner of the Integration & Collaborative Working Award went to Morgan Sindall, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Devereux Architects, WYG and Billinghurst George and Partners for Billingham Forum. The collaborative approach to design team meetings allowed the team to create and deliver a lean, waste free achievable programme of works that provided the client with an iconic regional landmark building.

The judges were looking for an organisation that has shown the greatest respect for its workforce and communities through workforce development, skills & training, benchmarking, equality & diversity and improvements to the working environment.
 
Mott MacDonald think that leadership and people development is one of the keys to future business success. Their submission concentrated on Sustainability which is a complex and multi- faceted subject and successfully developing skills, process and expertise in this area for an integrated approach across their business.
 
The Esh Group has been a registered ('Investors in People)' employer since December 2000 and believes that their strength lies in their people. Their wealth of experience and knowledge is the group’s biggest asset and work hard to nurture and cherish this unique advantage through their employment policies an extensive training programme.



The Legacy Award – Sustainability

Sustainability has three key aspects and the Judges took these into account when judging this award.
The Hub in Barnard Castle is a totally unique project providing a sustainable, innovative “world class” facility, designed and developed in conjunction with young people. It provides access to a unique range of cultural, leisure, sporting, recreational and educational facilities all housed within a WOW factor building and setting which is in harmony with its rural location.

SME Award

The judges were looking for evidence of business improvement through people development; adopting best practice, collaborative and new ways of working.
 
The winner of this year SME Awards went to P Plunkett Tiling Contractors. They strongly believe that their directly employed workforce allows them to continuously improve. They strive for and achieve an ethos of “get it right first time and leave the customer wanting to come back for more”. Employees understand "what they do, and why they do it".   They maintain high standards of material procurement and take an active interest in their KPI results, always striving to how they can be better. With over 30 apprentices since 1996 they boast Skill Build winners and finalists, many still with the company.

Innovation

Winner: Retrofit for the Future
 
This award recognises new working practices and the development of new solutions to the problems we encounter. Innovative solutions, which enhance the value of the finished product, without increasing the risks associated with it.
 
The Innovation Award went to Devereux Architects, Gentoo Group, Technology Strategy Board and Gentoo Construction. The scheme sets out to address how the causes of climate change, namely increased carbon dioxide emissions, can be tackled by the improvements to the existing housing stock. This was to a fixed budget and end results had to demonstrate that target savings were achieved. The approach taken by the design team was to adopt PassivHaus design principles to deliver the project goals.

Health & Safety CDM

The winner of this years Health & Safety Award went to Wates Living Space, Your Homes Newcastle, Gentoo Architects, Kent Design, Newcastle City Council, Bridging NewcastleGateshead, Hall & Partners, CK21 and DTA. The value of health and safety has been ingrained in the project from the very start. What’s more, their commitment has been fully embraced by both the site team and supply chain and enabled them to set the ambitious target of one million incident-free man-hours and they are well on their way to achieving this.

This award recognises projects which have been designed and constructed to achieve maximum benefit for owners and end users. Submissions received covered a cross section of schemes from the education, housing and transport sectors.
The winners Inspiredspaces –STaG shows that over the past four years they have been successful in achieving their key objectives establishing a long term capital programme delivering value for money.
It is their belief that the partnership exemplifies the values that sit at its
heart – that collaborative working will deliver opportunities for educational transformation through the delivery of high quality, cost effective solutions on time that benefit all stakeholders.

Heritage

This award recognises the achievement of high standards in the repair, re-use and revitalisation of the region’s historic buildings, sites and places.
The winner of this years Heritage Award went to Team Force Restoration and English Heritage. The project which forms the second phase of a larger project designed to add longevity to the structure through a measured scope of consolidation and repair works to the fabric preserving the monument for future generations to enjoy. The structure had suffered extensive masonry erosion and required also required re-pointing after previously inappropriate methods had been undertaken previously.

This Award is given to the project or organisation that has best compiled with the spirit and standards or best engineering practice in Design and Procurement of Building Services associated with the Built Environment. The winner of this years Award went to BES Consulting Engineers.

Keith Joe Jones showed exemplary actions that have changed the behaviour and performance of others and delivered disproportionate benefits for, and left a legacy in, the outputs of the built environment sector.



Project of the Year

The judges had a challenging task in selecting a winner and many factors were considered, including, technical achievement, innovation, design, teamwork, health and safety, quality, programme, cost and application of best practice. The entries were judged on the basis of the quality and content, the judges’ individual knowledge of projects, site visits and various other methods.
The winner of the 2011 Project of the Year Award went to Clugston Construction, Teesdale Community Resources and Browne Smith Baker. This totally unique project providing a sustainable, innovative “world class” facility set in harmony of its rural location.
